Steve Karp
Executive Director & Secretary

Prior to his appointment as Acting Vice President for University Advancement, Steve was the Director of Special Projects within Advancement’s Initiatives department. Steve supported the success of important University initiatives for obtaining corporate and private funding. This included matching University capacity with available opportunity and creating structure and support for projects identified as priorities during the Boldly Rising Capital Campaign and the Polytechnic Self Study.

Previously, Steve was the Associate Vice President for the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at Sonoma State University. In that role he successfully increased grant proposals, awards and revenue to the university, and the number of engaged faculty and students participating in hands-on research.

Prior to Sonoma State he was with Cal Poly Humboldt for 13 years, most recently as the Interim Dean of Research. While at Cal Poly Humboldt he built a strong, customer-service focused organization that enabled the university to increase the number of research proposals across a wide range of research, scholarly, and creative opportunities; develop processes and practices that enhance data tracking and management of awards; and expand outreach to stakeholders, including other CSUs and institutions of higher learning, and community and industry partners.

Steve possesses a rich background in the technology industry, where he worked in finance for several high-tech firms, including Apple Computer, Synopsys, Viacom and Santa Barbara Research Center. He was the Vice President of Finance at Nuasis, a Silicon Valley start-up that raised $40M, and was a Senior Director at Rainmaker Systems, a start-up that was successful in becoming a public company.

Steve received his B.S. in Economics from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and his M.S. in Systems Management from the University of Southern California.
