John was a field geologist and petrologist, who loved working in volcanic terranes. His passion was teaching students; he was dedicated to helping students learn to work in the field and become critical thinkers. He taught numerous field camps in the Schell Creek Range and Roberts Mountains of Nevada and Mazourka Canyon in Owens Valley, CA.
